The Sidney Prize and the Iwanter Prize
The Sidney Prize recognizes outstanding journalism that highlights social or economic injustice. Nominations for this prize may come from individual journalists or organizations; winners are announced every second Wednesday of the month by a panel of judges who evaluate its impact and how it contributes to public understanding. It is supported by a grant from Sidney Hillman Foundation.
Sidney Iwanter, an alumnus of the College of Letters and Science who holds a BA History degree (1971), provides the annual Iwanter Prize as an unrestricted award to one graduating senior who best demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of broad and interdisciplinary nature through their senior thesis and general academic distinction.
Overland Magazine is pleased to announce Rachel Ang as the winner of its 2024 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize with her story ‘Thalassophobia.’ Selected from a shortlist of ten submissions, the prize of $5,00000 will appear in Overland’s next print edition and can be read online as well. An artist and writer living on unceded Wangal land.

The annual Sydney Prize, established in 1946 in honor of former Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America President and leftist activist Sidney Hillman, awards monetary prizes to individuals and organizations for their activism in support of human rights, particularly within the US. The foundation is overseen by Workers United President Emeritus Bruce Raynor.

The Sidney & Adelaide Bank Foundation Prize for Excellence in Banking Scholarship was made possible through a generous gift from Sir Samuel Adelaide and Sir Charles Sidney (deceased). The annual prize pays tribute to two prominent Australian bankers while encouraging high quality research in banking and financial services. This competition is open to full-time higher degree program students enrolled at either University of Sydney or Monash University and attracts submissions from Australia and overseas. The winner is announced annually in July, and receives both a cash prize of $30,000 as well as an attractive trophy from our panel of renowned scholars in their own field as well as international experts on banking and finance as judges for this prize.
