Literature offers numerous prizes and scholarships for writers who excel in literary work, from literary work itself to deeds done for humanity. One such prestigious prize is Australia’s Sidney Prize; named after one of their famous cities and given out since 1902. Awarded annually since then to authors, poets, or those deemed important by its judging committee who have written works deemed valuable by its judging panel.

The Sidney Cox Prize at Dartmouth College was originally established to recognize and support his scholarly work, but now serves as an annual incentive to foster creative pursuits that meet high standards of scholarship, originality, and integrity. Professor Cox set these high standards both inside his classes and outside them.

Applying candidates are evaluated by a committee made up of scholars belonging to Phi Beta Kappa – a national honor society which promotes liberal education ideals through scholarship, undergraduate teaching, and leading efforts toward freedom and democracy. Winners will be announced during an event that mimics Professor Cox’s weekly gatherings for his students.

Are You Applying for the Sydney Prize? Those wishing to submit an entry should complete and submit the online application form by the deadline (usually the last day of each month). They should also include copies of their article(s)/books nominated – magazine publishers should submit according to publication date (e.g. July 27).

Additionally, other prizes are up for consideration beyond just The Sydney Prize. One is the Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award which acknowledges emerging film creatives working in short films within New South Wales – this year Chris Godfrey of 2023 winning film, “The Dancing Girl”, won this award and received $5,000 as his prize!

Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards, given annually to people who have made significant contributions to Australian performing arts, are one of Australia’s premier awards. Judges for these prestigious honors consider both past achievements and potential for future contributions to Australian culture through performing arts. In addition, judges take into account how performing arts help affirm Australia’s sense of self and community spirit as a nation. Nominees must reside within Australia to qualify; winners are typically announced between September and October each year.
