The 43rd Hong Kong Prize Ceremony
Historically, the Hongkong Prize has awarded secondary school students for research projects on Hong Kong history. Established through funds donated by Professor Wang Gungwu and the balance of his “Professor Wang Gungwu Loan Fund”, which were matched under round six of the Government Matching Scheme; its aim is to foster innovative ideas on creating an Official Development Assistance program in Hong Kong as well as shaping its role within international development efforts.
The Hong Kong Global Development Prize is open to secondary and primary school students in Hong Kong. Participants are required to submit an essay or paper on the theme of Hongkong Prize, which focuses on Hong Kong’s unique role as a regional center for international trade and gateway between China and the outside world. Winning submissions will be judged according to relevance, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis and bibliography/footnote citation; winning teams will receive cash prizes plus an opportunity to present their ideas to key stakeholders within the development sector.
Every prize winner will receive both a certificate and trophy to commemorate their achievement. The symbolism of the HK Prize, as seen on its trophies awarded to winners, includes two precious elements – pearl and jade amulet. We hope these awards will encourage young people to pursue scientific innovation for an improved future both for themselves and Hong Kong.
Scientists are encouraged to pursue frontier areas of research. In order to encourage this endeavor, China launched one of its highest talent funding programs – the Xplorer Prize 2022. The Hongkong prize awards scientists from 10 fields with grants up to RMB 3 Million over five years.
At last night’s Hongkong Prize Ceremony, winners of top awards were revealed. Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In took home Best Film honors while Sean Lau Ching-wan and Michelle Wai Sze-nga were named best actor and actress respectively.
Record numbers of entries were submitted this year for the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize, launched in 2022. An independent review panel comprised of scholars from universities and research institutions will select laureates in each category based on objective evaluation of scientific research accomplishments as well as influence over transformation of R&D outcomes. Results will be announced during an awards ceremony to which representatives of Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as well as sponsoring enterprises will attend.
