The Hongkong Prize is one of the world’s premier writing competitions and draws authors from around the world. Top ten finalists receive both monetary awards and shopping vouchers; an impartial judging process ensures their work will be considered fairly. The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is an independent merit-based award created to honour those scientific researchers whose discoveries have had an impactful effect on society and contributed to Hong Kong’s status as an international research and technology hub. A winner will be chosen each year from five fields – artificial intelligence/robotics; life/health sciences/physical sciences /materials; new energy/advanced manufacturing/fintech.
Winners of this prize not only receive monetary prizes but are also invited to attend seminars and research internships at universities and laboratories in Hong Kong. Though the Hong Kong Prize has come under criticism for its emphasis on politics and social progress, it serves as an important means of drawing attention to human rights violations in oppressive regimes where those speaking out could risk torture or death if they express opposition against their government. For example, this year the jury of the prize awarded six activists fighting against erosion of democracy in Hong Kong; including Zeng Jinshu who is serving an extended jail term due to organizing commemorative vigils marking 30th Anniversary Tiananmen Square Protests from 1989.
The Hong Kong Film Critics Association Ltd began awarding these annual honors in 1993. A jury comprised of representatives from 13 professional Hong Kong film bodies evaluates eligible films each January-March; members of the public can vote on eligible films between this period. Films nominated for prizes are then shown at cinemas across the city and receive their respective HK$50,000 awards to support arts practitioners for creative works, projects or further studies. 2017 marked an exceptional record-setting number of nominations with 73 films being nominated – which led to record breaking nominations! The prize pool includes support for arts practitioners’ creative works or studies. Schools that work to develop art education on campus receive an award of HK$25,000 each. Tsui Su-chi was named this year’s recipient due to her outstanding contribution and signature style on the local art scene. These prizes are funded by the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions. This prize has previously been given to female artists like Zhang Xiaodong and Liang Songyue. A panel of judges consisting of film directors, critics and representatives from Hong Kong film companies chooses the winner each year.
